Etsy's 2026 rules, with the dates checked

Every Etsy policy change currently affecting sellers, in one place, each one linked to Etsy's own page. Including the one almost everybody has dated wrong: the rule requiring your own original design took effect on 10 June 2025, not 11 August 2026.

The short version

  • Using a laser, Cricut, 3D printer, CNC or embroidery machine? The design has to be yours. A purchased SVG or a commercially licensed file does not qualify, licence or no licence. This has been the rule since 10 June 2025.
  • 11 August 2026 is a real date, but it is not the originality rule. It is the effective date of a revised Prohibited Items Policy, which bans natural animal fur "regardless of age or origin" — vintage included.
  • AI is allowed with disclosure — but only when built from your own prompts. Reselling prompt bundles is not.
  • Non-US sellers shipping to US buyers have had to prepay tariffs at checkout since 9 July 2026 or lose Purchase Protection.
  • If a listing is removed you get one appeal, 12 files and 180 days. One. Not one per attempt — one, ever, per listing.

Where the 11 August 2026 date came from

If you have read anything about Etsy's rules this year, you have probably seen a version of this sentence: from 11 August 2026, items made with computerized tools must be based on the seller's own original design. It has been repeated across seller blogs, newsletters and compliance tools all summer.

The rule is real. The date is not.

Etsy's Creativity Standards — the policy that actually contains the original-design requirement — carries a last-updated date of 10 June 2025. The original-design language has been sitting in it for over a year.

What genuinely took effect on 11 August 2026 is a revised Prohibited Items Policy, alongside a companion Animal Products Policy. You can read the dated version Etsy published for it here:

Neither mentions handmade status, computerized tools, templates or original design. They govern what may be sold at all — weapons, drugs, hate items, animal products. The two policies got welded together somewhere in the retelling, and the join has not come apart since.

Two things you can check yourself in under a minute: the Creativity Standards page still carries its 10 June 2025 last-updated stamp, and there is no pending or "effective starting" revision of it. The originality rule has one date, and it is not in August 2026.

Honest caveat

We can only verify what Etsy publishes. It is possible Etsy sent sellers a notice in August 2026 that is not reflected in any policy page's version history. We have not found one, and none of the widely circulated articles quotes such a notice or links to it. If you have received one, we would like to see it — Support@useprovenanceapp.com.

Why this matters practically: if you assumed the rule started in August 2026, you may also have assumed listings created before then were grandfathered in. They are not. The standard has applied to your whole catalogue since June 2025.

Computerized tools must run your own design

This is the change with the widest blast radius, and the one worth reading in Etsy's own words rather than anyone's summary:

Items produced using computerized tools: Physical items that a seller produced in their personal shop or home, using computerized tools such as a laser printer, 3D printer, CNC or Cricut machine. These items must be produced based on a seller's original design and are often personalized or customized to a buyer's specification.

Etsy Creativity Standards — "Made by a seller"

The previous version of the policy permitted items made with computerized tools and a templated design or pattern. That allowance is gone. The tool can be automated; the design cannot be someone else's.

Who this actually hits

  • Laser cutting and engraving — anyone working from downloaded SVG or vector files, including files bought from design marketplaces.
  • Sublimation and DTF — pre-made PNG design packs applied to blanks.
  • Machine embroidery — purchased digitized stitch files.
  • 3D printing — selling prints of STL files somebody else modelled, even under a commercial licence.
  • Cricut and vinyl — cut files bought rather than drawn.
  • Print on demand — artwork bought from a design marketplace rather than made.

Note what is not affected: the tool itself was never the problem. A laser cutter is as acceptable as a table saw. Hand-guided tools, hand-altered commercial bases and hand-assembled components all still qualify under the same category. What changed is where the design comes from.

What clears it Your design files, dated earlier than the listing, showing the work. Source files with layers and version history, sketches, the intermediate saves. A finished flat file proves nothing about who made it — the mess in between is the part that does.

The four categories every listing must fit

Etsy requires every item to show "a human touch" through one of four attributions. Knowing which one your listing sits in matters, because if it is ever removed, the evidence Etsy asks for is different for each.

CategoryQualifiesDoes not qualify
Made by a seller Handcrafted from raw materials; hand-altered commercial bases using real handcraft skill; hand-assembled components; items made on computerized tools from the seller's original design. Items assembled per manufacturer instructions. Commercial bases with "only superficial alteration."
Designed by a seller Original digital downloads. Original designs produced with a disclosed production partner. AI creations made from the seller's own prompts, disclosed. "A bundle, collection, scan, or PDF of someone else's work." AI prompt bundles.
Handpicked by a seller Vintage items 20+ years old, personally curated. One-of-a-kind natural items personally found or cultivated. Gift baskets with a genuine unifying theme. Resold commercially available newer items. Resold commercial gift baskets. Generic themes — "candy", "clothes", "mystery box".
Sourced by a seller Craft supplies, blanks and kits whose purpose is making something by hand. Party supplies with a distinct aesthetic. Buyer-personalized items produced by a partner. Resold blank ready-to-use items. Generic resold supplies — office, automotive, cosmetic, DIY.

A few consequences that catch people out. Vintage now only qualifies under Handpicked — the vintage allowance was removed from the digital-bundle language. Party favors were dropped from Sourced. Modification services — tailoring, repairs, photo retouching, jewellery alterations — are now explicitly permitted.

Interpretation Most common mistake

A commercial licence is not an original design

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the current rules, so it is worth stating flatly: buying the right to sell something commercially is not the same as having designed it.

A commercial-use licence from a design marketplace settles a copyright question between you and the designer. It says the designer will not sue you. It says nothing at all about whether the design is yours, which is the only question Etsy's Creativity Standards asks. Sellers who have carefully bought extended licences for every file in their catalogue are, on this rule, in the same position as sellers who bought nothing.

The harder and more interesting case is the seller who starts from a purchased or licensed asset and genuinely transforms it — redraws it, recomposes it, builds something new on top. Etsy's policy does not draw a bright line here, and no public guidance quantifies how much change is enough. What you can control is whether the change is visible: whether you can show the asset you started from, the work you did, and the result, in sequence.

Worth knowing

This is a before-and-after problem, and it is close to impossible to solve retroactively. Once the finished file is the only file you still have, the record of the transformation is gone — and it is exactly the record that distinguishes your version from the template it started as.

What clears it The licence and the transformation record. Keep the purchase receipt and licence terms, the original asset as downloaded, and dated intermediate versions showing what you changed. The licence answers the designer; the versions answer Etsy.

AI is allowed, undisclosed AI is not

Etsy permits AI-assisted work under "Designed by a seller," with two conditions. The work must come from your own prompts, and you have to say so:

If an item is created through the use of artificial intelligence, you must disclose this in your relevant listings.

Etsy Seller Policy

The Creativity Standards frame the qualifying case as "creations that were generated using AI tools … based on a seller's original prompts," and explicitly exclude AI prompt bundles — selling the prompts themselves is not a qualifying digital product.

The practical trap is that the prompt is the authorship claim, and prompts are the easiest thing in the world to lose. They live in a chat history you do not own, on a service that may not keep it.

What clears it The prompt text, the tool used, the date, and the output it produced — kept together. Plus the disclosure actually written into the listing description, not just intended.

Production partners, photos and accurate representation

Etsy's Seller Policy was updated on 9 June 2026 and took effect 9 July 2026. Three requirements in it are enforced routinely and are worth checking your listings against:

  • Production partner disclosure. "If you work with a production partner, you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings."
  • Your own photography. Listings must use "your own photographs or video content — not stock photos, artistic renderings, or photos used by other sellers or sites." Limited exceptions exist for custom and production-partner items, but mockups pulled from a design pack are a common removal trigger.
  • Accurate representation. Listings must give "an accurate representation of how the item was made, by whom, and where it is being shipped from."

The third is broader than it looks. It is the clause that makes an inaccurate attribution category a policy violation in its own right, separate from whether the item itself would have qualified.

What clears it Partner correspondence and your own photos of the item. If a partner produces the item, Etsy asks for documents showing your creation process or communication with that partner — so keep the thread, the brief and the files you sent.

Prohibited items: fur, regardless of age

This is what the 11 August date actually belongs to. The revised Prohibited Items Policy keeps the same eight categories — alcohol and drugs, animal products and human remains, dangerous items, hate items, illegal items, internationally regulated items, nudity and sexual content, violent items — and the substantive change is in animal products.

The operative text reads:

Items made from or containing natural animal fur, including mink, fox, rabbit, badger, coyote, and raccoon dog, regardless of age or origin. This does not include taxidermy, byproduct materials, such as leather, sheepskin, shearling, cowhide, wool, or mohair, or fur products from sellers registered with the Indian Arts and Crafts Board.

Prohibited Items Policy, effective 11 August 2026

Four words do the work: regardless of age or origin. Vintage status is not a defence. A 1940s fur collar is prohibited on the same terms as a new one — which matters, because "20+ years old and personally curated" qualifies an item under Handpicked by a seller everywhere else in Etsy's rules. Not here.

The exemptions are worth knowing precisely: taxidermy is fine, byproduct materials are fine — leather, sheepskin, shearling, cowhide, wool, mohair — and sellers registered with the Indian Arts and Crafts Board are exempt. Etsy also publishes a separate Animal Products Policy on the same effective date, which states the fur rule in slightly different words. If you sell anything in this category, read both.

A note on what we can verify

Etsy replaces a policy page's contents when the new version takes effect, so the pre-11-August text is no longer retrievable from Etsy and we cannot show you a side-by-side diff. What is verifiable is the rule as it stands today, quoted above. Widely circulated summaries describing this as a newly removed vintage exemption may well be right — we simply cannot confirm it from a primary source, so we are not asserting it.

Non-US sellers must prepay US tariffs

If you ship to US buyers from outside the United States, you are required to use Delivered Duty Paid shipping — tariffs calculated and paid up front, folded into the checkout price, rather than collected from the buyer on delivery.

Non-compliance carries two documented consequences: the order loses Etsy Purchase Protection eligibility, and if a buyer is charged tariffs or collection fees on arrival they can be refunded — with Etsy deducting the amount from your account. Sellers have also reported reduced search visibility for non-DDP listings; Etsy has not confirmed this and we flag it as unverified.

Etsy's stated reasoning was blunt — roughly two-thirds of US buyers surveyed said they would abandon a purchase if hit with an unexpected tariff at the door.

Practically: enable a DDP option with your carrier, use Etsy's tariff estimator but verify it, check your HS codes and customs descriptions, and reprice for the US market to absorb the duty.

Fees: what you pay now

The current baseline, from Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy (last updated 13 February 2026):

FeeAmount
Listing$0.20 per item
Transaction6.5% of price + shipping + gift wrap
Offsite Ads — under $10k/yr15%
Offsite Ads — $10k+/yr12% (locked in for life)
Currency conversion2.5%
Payment processingVaries by bank country

The Offsite Ads detail is easy to miss and worth money: crossing $10,000 in sales drops your rate from 15% to 12% permanently, even if sales later fall back below the threshold.

Regulatory Operating Fee, revised 22 June 2026

This fee applies only in certain countries and is charged on top of everything above. The June revision moved several rates and added one:

CountryPreviousCurrentChange
France0.47%1.14%+0.67
Hungary1.97%new
India0.29%0.05%−0.24
Italy0.32%0.80%+0.48
Spain0.72%0.88%+0.16
Türkiye2.27%1.67%−0.60
United Kingdom0.32%0.48%+0.16

French sellers absorbed the largest move — the rate more than doubled.

Procedure Read before you need it

If a listing is removed: the appeal, and its limits

Removals under the Creativity Standards go through Shop Manager → Policy violations → View & appeal → Start an appeal. The constraints are strict, published, and the reason most appeals fail on preparation rather than merit:

ConstraintLimit
Window to appeal180 days from removal
Attachments12 files maximum
Minimum file sizeLarger than 120 KB
Video length3 minutes or less
Video file size500 MB maximum
Attempts allowedOne
Review time~3 days, up to 10–12 business days

Etsy states it plainly: "Once an appeal is denied, you can't submit another appeal for the same removed listing." There is no second attempt with better evidence. Whatever you send is the case.

Twelve files is the constraint people underestimate. It is not a generous allowance you fill with whatever you have — it is a curation problem. Twelve files chosen to answer the specific question Etsy asked beat forty files that happen to exist.

What Etsy asks for, by category

Your attributionEvidence Etsy requests
Made by youImages or video of raw materials, tools, or the workspace used. Video of you physically creating the item start to finish.
Designed by you, made by a partnerDocuments showing your creation process, or communication with the partner. Video of you designing the item, or of your production partner creating it from your design.
Handpicked / curatedImages or video of stock and packaging, or how you found the item.
Sourced by youDocuments or video showing how and where you source supplies.

Notice what is absent from that list, because it cuts against a lot of marketing in this space: Etsy never asks for a hash, a blockchain record, a certificate or a chain-of-custody document. Every accepted item is media showing process. An unedited camera roll clears Etsy's stated bar — if you happen to have shot the right things, and can still find them.

The evidence is easy. Having it later is the hard part.

Nothing above requires anything exotic. It requires that when Etsy emails you — possibly about a listing you made two years ago — the design files, the versions, the prompts and the process photos still exist, are still dated, and can be handed over as a set inside the 12-file limit.

Provenance is where that record lives. You upload as you work; each file is timestamped and hashed on receipt, filed against the product, and can be exported as an Originality Packet when you need it.

Provenance records what you uploaded and when, and that it hasn't changed since. It does not establish legal ownership or authorship, and no service can guarantee the outcome of an Etsy appeal. Provenance is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Etsy, Inc.

What documentation clears each rule

The whole page, compressed into the only question that matters when something goes wrong: what would you need to show?

RuleWhat actually answers it
Original design, computerized toolsLayered source files, sketches and dated intermediate versions — predating the listing
Transformation of a licensed assetPurchase receipt and licence terms, the original file as downloaded, and the versions in between
AI-assisted workThe prompt text, tool, date and resulting output, kept together — plus disclosure in the listing
Production partnerThe brief, the correspondence, the files you supplied, video of the partner producing from your design, and the disclosure in the listing
Made by you, by handProcess photos and video: raw materials, tools, workspace, the build
Handpicked or curatedPhotos of stock and packaging, and a record of where you found it
Sourced by youSupplier records showing how and where you source
Own photographyCamera originals with intact capture metadata

One structural point about that last row, which applies more widely than it looks. Metadata is what points backwards in time. A file's capture date is often the only thing indicating when the work happened rather than when it was filed — and most upload and resizing pipelines strip it silently. If you are keeping evidence anywhere, keep the originals.

Gaps Unpublished

What Etsy has not said

A reference page is more useful when it marks its own edges. These are things sellers reasonably want to know that no primary source answers:

  • How often the originality rule is actually enforced. Etsy's 2025 transparency reporting showed total policy-violation removals down substantially year over year, driven largely by fewer Creativity Standards removals. Whether enforcement rises through late 2026 is a reasonable expectation, not a documented fact.
  • What share of appeals succeed. Etsy publishes no figure for appeals filed, upheld or denied. Anyone quoting a success rate is estimating.
  • How much transformation is enough. No public guidance quantifies the threshold for turning a licensed asset into your own design.
  • Whether appeals coverage is complete. As of mid-2026 Etsy described appeals coverage as still rolling out, with broader coverage intended by year end. The limits above are current, and may move.

We re-check every policy on this page quarterly, and correct it when Etsy changes something. If you spot something out of date, tell us.

Questions

Common questions

Can I still sell laser-cut items made from SVG files I bought?

Not under the "Made by a seller" category as Etsy currently defines it. The policy requires items produced with computerized tools to be "produced based on a seller's original design," and a purchased cut file is not your design regardless of the licence attached to it. Your options are to draw your own files, transform purchased ones substantially enough that the result is genuinely yours — and be able to show that transformation — or move those products off Etsy.

Does a commercial-use licence make a design mine?

No. A commercial licence resolves copyright between you and the designer — it means they won't sue you. Etsy's Creativity Standards ask a different question: whether the design is your original work. Those are separate tests and passing one does not pass the other.

What actually changed on 11 August 2026?

A revised Prohibited Items Policy and a companion Animal Products Policy took effect. Both prohibit natural animal fur "regardless of age or origin," so vintage status is not a defence. Neither touches handmade status, computerized tools or original design — those come from the Creativity Standards, updated 10 June 2025.

Are listings I created before the rule changed grandfathered in?

No. Etsy's Creativity Standards apply to listings as they stand, not as of when they were created. Older listings are subject to the current policy.

Can I sell AI-generated art on Etsy?

Yes, with conditions. It must be generated from your own prompts and you must disclose the use of AI in the listing description. Selling prompt bundles themselves does not qualify as a digital product under the Creativity Standards.

How many times can I appeal a removed listing?

Once. Etsy's help documentation states that once an appeal is denied you cannot submit another appeal for the same removed listing. You have 180 days from removal to file, and can attach up to 12 photos, videos or documents.

Does a blockchain record or file hash help with an Etsy appeal?

Not directly. Etsy's published guidance never asks for a hash, a blockchain entry or a certificate — every category of evidence it requests is media or documents showing your process. A hash proves a file has not changed since it was recorded, which is useful for establishing that a dated record is intact, but it is not what Etsy asks to see and no one should sell it to you as though it were.

I'm outside the US. What do I have to do about tariffs?

Since 9 July 2026, orders shipped to US buyers must use Delivered Duty Paid shipping, with tariffs prepaid and included in the checkout price. If a buyer gets charged on delivery instead, they can be refunded with Etsy deducting the amount from your account, and the order loses Purchase Protection eligibility.
